Modi'in, Israel's youngest city, is located in a geographically strategic intersection in the center of the country. Intent on maintaining its rightfully designated place as a lively metropolis, it serves, as it did historically, as the center for the towns, villages and cities in the region. Modi'in reflects a new era in city-building, a planned city whose high goals were clear from the start. Considerable attention was given to the quality of life of the residents, including environmental considerations in construction and planning, together with the welfare of the inhabitants. Modi'in, a longtime symbol of Jewish heroism and independence, is the revival of the ancient village bearing this name, where a local Hasmonean family dared lead the revolt against Greek rule and Hellenism.
Population
Young, academic and growing, the population of Modi'in is characterized by established families, with the heads of families aged between 24-44 years old.
Many of the residents arrived from Jerusalem or the Greater Tel Aviv area, as well as from other parts of the country. The city is also actively involved in absorbing a lively stream of new and veteran immigrants, including many English speakers. Approximately 60,000 residents currently call Modi'in home, but this is constantly changing. 4,000 housing units are being built yearly with 2,000 of them sold and populated immediately upon completion. There are still extensive areas in the planning stages, which will accommodate the many more expected residents. The aim is to reach the quarter of a million mark, enabling Modi'in to realize another of its dreams - to become Israel's fourth largest city.
Education
In an incredible growth rate for a young city, it went from five hundred pupils in 1996 when it was first established, to over 17,000 students today. But numbers aren't everything, and Modi'in goes out of its way to ensure not only pluralism and diversity in the educational system, but excellence as well. Considering itself the city of the future, Modi'in invests in its future daily. All educational institutions are being outfitted with computer networks and internet access, facilitating advanced active study and incorporating information technologies in the classroom, in research, and group and personal projects.
The goal of quality of education is reflected in the many programs being operated and initiated in the system. These include, Pisga , an educational development program, programs for gifted children, as well as extra classes for children with learning disabilities.
The city also has one of the highest matriculation results in the country.
The Modi'in Interdisciplinary Center operates an adult college, offering a variety of study subjects. Courses include language studies, personal enrichment, university-certified diploma studies, as well as lectures and classes on a variety of subjects.
Employment
In addition to its prime strategic location, making employment options a possibility in two major cities Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Modi'in is creating its own more local opportunities in extensive business, commercial and industrial districts. Light industry and services, employment zoning, including large shopping centers, garages, offices, nurseries and warehouses, are planned in an area covering 700 dunam in southwest part of the city. Adorning the buildings will be open spaces, tree-lined streets and green areas making it not only functional for the 6,000 workers who will find jobs there, but pleasant as well. Meanwhile accessibility to five roads and highways link Modi'in to the major traffic routes while work on a railway, promises to make the ride even shorter and more comfortable, in the near future. Today the young city's inhabitants are typically employed in education, engineering, technical jobs, medicine, hi-tech industry, economy and senior military jobs both within Modi'in, as well as in the general area.
Culture and Sports
Modi'in provides year- round culture, sport and leisure activities. Special events such as the Purim Parade, the annual Chanukah Festival, Independence Day celebrations, the dance festival, Book Fair, Harmonica festival and artists' exhibition, to name a few, compete with the extensive year round activities. Children and adults enjoy concerts, shows and movies as well as sing-a-longs, hikes and excursions, in addition to municipal and community center-operated classes and workshops throughout the city. The sports centers and country club offer swimming, gymnasiums and athletic fields for personal use, competitions and team games. As the city grows, so do the services. Residents enjoy a municipal library, while six cultural halls and additional sports arenas, are under construction.
There are four different youth movements, which actively involve the youth, as well as The Society for the Protection of Nature, offering a variety of hikes and nature appreciation, amongst the organization.
Services and Development
Although Modi'in is intent on providing all the services of a city, it at the same time works to create an atmosphere of beauty, tranquility and nature. With a keen environmental approach, the city was erected with underground infrastructure, recycling awareness and is in the process of constructing water conservation systems. The main streets are open boulevards with abundant parks and play areas, and blossoming trees and gardens. There are many green niches, and the city was designed to utilize the advantages of the natural landscape. Industrial and commercial districts are separated from residential areas. Modi'in has many historical and archeological sites maintained by the municipality. Students and visitors are encouraged to become familiar with them, while plans are underway to develop them as tourist facilities. Offering emergency services, health clinics, banks as well as commercial centers, Modi’in is clearly a modern city, but also maintains its character as a lovely place to live, whose goals are first and foremost the quality of life of its residents.
