Cycling is Promoted in Branding Karmiel as a City for Young Families

On May 27th , in discussions held as part of the Karmiel, Misgav and Pittsburgh Partnership 2000 Joint Steering Committee plans were presented to expose the significant awakening that has come about concerning cycling in the city, as part of its efforts to be branded as a city for young families.

The City of Karmiel, its various departments, community centers, the "Perchai Karmiel" Association, Partnership 2000, volunteers and public officials have begun to work vigorously in the assimilation of cycling as an integral activity among the city's pupils, their parents and grandparents.

Cycling in Karmiel will during the coming season receive a significant push both on the "beginners" level and in the advancement of the city's professional cyclists.

Over the past two years, tens of thousands of dollars have been invested in the area of infrastructure through assistance provided by the Pittsburgh Jewish Community for the development of the "Partnership 2000 Trail", a 21.75 mi cycling trail.

The trail begins in the city's Givat Ram neighborhood (at the Pittsburgh Boardwalk) passing around the city on a circular route until in drops sharply to the Hilazon Stream bed where it continues westward within the jurisdiction of the Misgav Regional Council. The trail includes various landscapes and cycling difficulties, and is suited for all levels of cycling. The trail's breath-taking scenery is unique throughout the year.

Currently efforts are being made by Adi Eldar, the city's mayor, together with the director of the city's Engineering Department to move forward in the development of professional "single" trails in the IDF Forest in cooperation with the KKL-JNF. These 6.84 mi routes will meet the needs of the most advanced cyclists.

During the coming year activities will include enhancing awareness concerning safe cycling. The subject will be discussed and practiced at the city's summer day camps, in its schools and among adults willing to learn. In addition, special "Family Fun Days" will be organized around cycling that will provide an additional shared, learning and fun experience. Family cycling trips will be organized as well as special cycling activities for individuals with special needs.

The guests from Pittsburgh who toured the route and met with cycling groups along the way expressed their excitement concerning the project and are already actively planning for a visit by a Pittsburgh area cycling club this coming spring.
