NAZARETH ILLIT, founded in 1957, boasts an outstanding educational system and a reputation throughout Israel for its highly successful program of immigrant absorption. From 1990 and 1995, its population has doubled. With 45,000 residents Nazareth Illit is the capital of the Galilee region. It is a city characterized by rapid economic growth and a very solid industrial base. The city is now developing an enhanced tourism infrastructure to accommodate thousands of visitors who will be participating in fesivities commemorating the millennium.

Education and Culture

Nazareth Illit has more than 10,000 students in ten elementary, two junior high schools, and two senior high schools. In addition, a Technical College offers courses in engineering, as well as courses for upgrading the technical skills of industrial plant employees. A network of five community centers offers a large variety of cultural and sports activities.

Housing

  
Entire new neighborhoods have sprung up in various sections of the city, including the new jurisdiction of Har Yona, an area of 1,500 acres. Thousands of new housing units have been built in these new developments.

Industry

There are five industrial zones in the city, the newest being Ziporit, one of Israel's largest industrial parks. A technological incubator, a small business incubator and an economic development unit -- all sponsored by Partnership 2000 -- provide support to enterepeneurs in the planning and development of trade, industry and tourism.

Tourism

Nazareth Illit is preparing for the boom expected in the year 2000. Four new hotels, with 1000 rooms, are in various stages of planning and construction. Many tourism related businesses are expected to develop as the year 2000 approaches. The region offers nature-based tourist attractions as well as numerous historical, archaeological, and religious sites.

Trade

Nazareth Illit is a large retail commercial center, with two new shopping malls.

Public Service

Nazareth Illit is the capital city of the Galilee. Most of the regional offices of the government ministries located here, including Education, Police, Interior, Treasury and Housing. Nazareth Illit is also the seat of the District Court.
