Central Galilee pupils get a feel for Judaism at Tzippori
Central Galilee pupils get a feel for Judaism at Tzippori
Tzippori 200 C.E. - R. Yehuda Hanasi codifies the mishnah in this scenic Galilee mountain town. Tzippori 2000 C.E. - five hundred fifth and sixth graders from nearby Central Galilee communities linked with Michigan connect with Tzippori and put Jewish identity on their agenda.

Taking a pluralistic approach to Judaism, pupils envision some of struggles Yehuda Hanasi endured in this mixed Roman-Jewish town. Archeologists have unearthed extensive finding in Tzippori, including a Roman amphitheater, some extraordinary mosaics, and lavish housing units.

"We address a series of objectives", explains project coordinator Mark Rosenschein of the Jewish Education Association of the Galilee (Shorashim). "These include fostering Jewish Identity and tolerance, connecting participants with their history, developing cultural sensitivity, fostering a pluralistic approach to Jewish tradition, creating a regional identity, and enhancing ties between Jews in Israel and the Diaspora".

The yearlong program typically starts with pupils learning about Tzippori in the classroom and site visits to Tzippori, followed by preparation of research projects by individuals and small groups of pupils. Participating schools cap off the year with "happenings" such as exhibits of the pupils' projects or family visits to Tzippori.
