We know that likewise, most criminals understand that their deeds are evil when they perform their initial crimes; they simply don't manage to overcome their desires. Hassidism's foremost tenet instructs people to go beyond their intellect in their connection to the Almighty. An intellectual connection is not enough; someone may fully understand how important it is to work the Almighty, yet have his heart and body drift far away. The Hassid must fully connect his soul and body to the Almighty. Every mitzvah which he performs must stir him emotionally and arouse intensive spiritual pleasure. In addition to the intrinsic value of performing Mitzvoth with the entire soul and body, there is added value that such a person receives - he stands a much better chance of overcoming iniquitous desires which threaten to tear him away from the source of all good and send him down to a bottomless pit.
