6. Concluding a Discussion

You made it through. Now try to move your group out of the discussion with the same momentum with which you pulled them in.

Ask members to summarize the points covered. Throw out questions to them:
- What questions were answered?
- Which are as yet unanswered?
- Are people intrigued to learn more?
- What were the issues discussed, problems solved, decisions made?
- Where does the group go from here?
In a one-off discussion with any group, the amount of territory you covered within your larger subject is probably limited. Leave them with something provocative that you held back until now: a story, a puzzling question - something to make them think in the context of the larger subject.
If the group or subject is ongoing, give group members - or let them find for themselves - an idea of where the group will go next.
Remember, if the group is ongoing, not everything needs to be neatly tied up. A loose thread with which to begin the next discussion may be just what you need for them to swing back into action (as you may have noted in the questions above!)
