The Summer Shlichim Program
Bringing Israel closer to Camp
A Message from the Director
Most Jewish mothers want their sons to be doctors, not my parents...they thought the most wonderful thing would be for their son to be a Shaliach. My parents were greatly influenced by Shlichim in their youth growing up in New York and Boston. Immediately after statehood, Shlichim were sent to youth organizations throughout the world. They arrived wearing khaki shorts, funny cone shaped hates ("Cova Tembels") and those royal blue shirts with different colored strings and ties to represent their youth movements. My parents’ generation wanted to be like them, Israelis, doing only good for the Jewish world.
Today, Jewish summer camps have enriched the Jewish world. Jewish camping has been judged one of the most important venues for a Jewish child to continue to be proud of their heritage. Today the Shaliach continues the message of Jewish continuity and the vitality of Israel through The Summer Shlichim Program. Our program is a stronghold for building and maintaining pride in Israel, and Judaism. The Shlichim not only contribute to the communities abroad, but return to Israel with a better understanding of the diversity of Jewish life both in Israel and abroad, and the result is a process of mutual enrichment.
